THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
WHAT MADE US TODAY
Employment
There were different jobs for different ages. Children often worked as chimney cleansers, scavengers, and piercers of factory workers. Adults many worked in factors if not cleaners.
Punishments
If a worker arrived 5 minutes late he would often be beaten with a stap or a stick.
If workers were too tired (especially children), they would often be dipped in cold water or hit by a strap.
If someone tried to run away they would either be sent to prison or they would be shut in iron rooms.
Children would often be beaten to death and woman would have to have their hair cut off.
There was no safety within the working area, most people would become sick, or receive a long-term disease while working in factories.
Jobs
Piercers: This would often be the job of the child, because they would be small enough to crawl into the machines and repair the broken threads, although they only hand alittle amount of time to get the job done because of the wheel. This job often left children missing arms or legs.
Scavengers: Children would have to pick up the cotton on the floor while the machines were running, the job extremely affected their health as it was difficult to breathe due to the dust.
